A new Hilux has hit our shores, well, sort of. The Hilux which has one of the biggest cult followings in  South Africa has not only been upgraded but also improved.

We sampled it out on a short drive in the Cape and I was blown away, not only in terms of the newfound comfort but also the interior upgrades, namely the JBL sound, which is now also available in the range.

The engine has received minor tweaks with a larger Turbocharger, better flowing fuel rail, and a counterbalancer, which makes it a lot smoother to drive. The traction control on the new Hilux is also much improved with a lot less wheelspin required for it to come into action. This makes driving any form of an obstacle course, or off-road a breeze, without having to engage the rear diff-lock. The latter is also standard and works really well too in cross-axle situations.

The Legend RS (RS standing for Roller Shutter) is an optional accessory package with an electronic rear roller tailgate shutter, with LED lamps mounted on the inside. It finishes off the vehicle in premium lifestyle kind of way and looks really attractive.  The binliner is also been rubberized and is also dustproof. The tailgate is assisted and about 40 % lighter to lift up than the previous model.

The new 2.8 makes a very healthy 150kw and 500nm (Auto) and can also tow a very impressive 3.5 Tons with a braked trailer.

Overall driving comfort is improved with a new range of shock absorbers, spring rates, and swaybars. I can confirm that it makes an enormous difference when driving off-road, unladed.

Finally, we have Apple car play and Android auto with wifi streaming. This will makes access to services like apple music and Spotify a breeze. The JBL sound with the additional subwoofer also sounds fantasitic.

All Hilux models have a 3-year/100 000 km warranty and a 9-services/90 000 km service plan.
