Chev Spark LS

Micro hatches are everywhere. Every now and then a new manufacturer brings a new model or a face lifted model to the table to keep things fresh, so when I got to sample the Chevrolet Spark LS, I was pleasantly surprised that cheap, or shall I rather say affordable, is not always bland or boring.

The Spark LS is the top of the range Spark model available and it features all the goodies that you would find in something a little more expensive.  It has power steering, driver and passenger electric windows, electric mirrors and an air conditioner. This puts the young driver in a very nice place for a 1st or 2nd car.

The 1.2l 16v engine makes a whopping 60kw and its very rev happy. It’s not uncommon to drive it a little harder than usual, but it rewards you with a raspy-sounding exhaust and a fair amount of acceleration for such a small sized engine car.  It also has driver and passenger airbags with ABS and EBD. The brakes work well even though they are front disks only, which is also not uncommon in this price bracket.

The speedo is analogue while the rev counter is digital along with the fuel gauge. Tank capacity is 35liters and claimed combined fuel consumption of 5.4l/100km. The radio supports Mp3 and also has a USB input, so you can listen to your tunes while zipping about town.

Front compartment space is pretty impressive and myself, being 6 foot plus, did not feel at all cramped, and even with the seats all the way adjusted to the back, you could still fit in passengers. The only negative remark about cabin space is that you lose boot space, which in this case is only 170l.

Our little Spark LS was fitted with the optional sport kit, which included 15inch alloy wheels with wider tires. It also had front spotlights with side skirts, a rear boot spoiler and rear bumper spoiler with a fancy chrome tip. This transforms the car to a pretty sporty little hatch. While it will never really be a hot hatch, it still looks pretty good!

The Chevrolet Spark LS retails at R116 500 without our extras fitted.

Go drive one, it will surprise you!
