Toyota Avanza 1.5 SX

Transporting a bigger family can be hard work. Thankfully, Toyota has put an affordable option on the table with the Avanza. Hard to believe that something of this size can actually be a true 7 seater.

Cabin space on the new Avanza is pretty impressive. Lots of room for the driver, passenger and even the rear occupants.  The last row can get little crowded, depending on how far the rear seats are adjusted, but all in all, not bad for a car that’s available for around R170 000.

The Avanza SX is powered by a 1.5 16valve with VVT engine which makes 76kw and 136nm. This little engine is mated to a 4 speed automatic transmission, with shift lock. To get the most out of the engine, it does need a bit of motivation with the right foot, but for something only powered by a 1.5l engine, this little Avanza gets up and goes pretty easily.  The engine noise is a little bit loud when you start getting enthusiastic, but it’s mainly due to the shift patterns of the automatic gearbox. Once you start cruising all is forgiven and the Avanza will happily sit at 130kph the whole day with very little issues. Fuel economy is pretty good too at around 7l/100km.

The interior of the Avanza is what I would refer to as durable. A lot of hard plastics that will definitely hold up if you ever need to start a mini school shuttle service or even if you are looking to start your own transportation company at which this particular car will do very well.

Our SX model was fitted with an after-market CD player, because from the factory the radio is not a standard feature. Nonetheless, there are very good head units available these days and fitting them, or having them fitted, is a quick job for any audio installer. The Avanza SX comes standard with electric windows, auto mirrors, power steering and air-conditioning. There are also 2 airbags; driver and passenger and ABS brakes are standard.

Ground clearance is a very impressive 200mm, which is higher than some soft-roaders such as the Honda CRV and Nissan Qashqai.  The loading space with the last row seats in place is very little, however when the seats flip forward you have around the 400l mark.

The Avanza is really one of those perfect affordable MPV’s on the market which will do most of it without fuss. It’s near perfect for the expanding family who needs more space than what a conventional vehicle is willing to give.

Our Automatic 1.5 SX Version retails for R190 500 and comes with a 3 year / 100 000km warranty and a 4 year 60 000km Toyota care plan. Service intervals are every 15 000km.
