Renault Kwid First Drive

It’s exciting to see that in our current economic state, big brands like Renault can still offer really affordable cars with surprisingly good, if not great features.

I was lucky enough to sample Renault’s new baby of the range, the Kwid. Built in India, one would expect cheaper than average build quality, but I was surprised, that a cheap and cheerful car, can actually feel pretty good on the inside.

Sure it’s not on the level of the Sandero or Duster, but neither is the price tag. The range starts off at a really affordable R119 900. The funky looking Kwid isn’t just all about being cheap. On the inside, you do have a few luxuries like front electric windows, 1 driver airbag and a fairly decent MediaNav, lifted from more expensive models, like the Duster and Captur. This has Bluetooth, USB with Aux in and Mp3 playback.

Driving visibility is great, and while the seat is only 4 way adjustable (forward and backward and reclines), I think that most people would not have any trouble with the overall view of their surroundings. There are plenty of stowaway places in the passenger part of the dash too, with a pop-up type cubby at the top and the conventional cubby at the bottom. There are also 1-liter bottle holders in the driver and passenger door. The boot space is an impressive 300l and to give perspective, that’s the exact size of the Clio4. The rear seats have ample space and I had no trouble getting my 1.95m frame in the back with the passenger seat about halfway adjusted to the rear.

Speaking of 1liter; the Kwid is powered by a 3 cylinder 999cc engine making 50kw and 91nm of torque. While this may not sound like much, it only weighs 695kg, which means it has a decent power to weight ratio of 72kw per ton, which puts it on par with cars in the segment above. While overall consumption is claimed at 4.7l / 100km, we saw 5.3l/100km with some really enthusiastic driving. The Kwid is no robot racer, but gets up and goes pretty easy without fuss.
